Tarpon Springs is known for its two, pristine beaches and beautiful sunsets on the Gulf of Mexico. In years past, Sunset Beach was a community gathering spot for dances, weddings, picnics and other social events, centered around a large pavilion extending over the water. The original pavilion burned many years ago, but the beach continued to draw residents and visitors. The City of Tarpon Springs occasionally held evening events on the beach, but in 1999 several area residents proposed a free concert series to call attention to this very special landmark and gathering place.
Friends of Music on the Beach (a small volunteer group) formed and began working with the City of Tarpon Springs to line up performers, distribute flyers, manage parking, and take care of other tasks necessary to build a free concert series (on a shoestring)! The first concert series was presented in 2000, with public/private support. Tarpon Springs officials have heartily embraced the program, and several city departments provide essential services to make the concerts possible. The number of concerts per year grew to ten in 2008, and the series has attracted a large following of "regulars" each month. There is nothing better than listening to music on the beach, watching the sun set and the moon rise, while couples stroll, children play, families enjoy picnics and the stars come out. Most of our concerts are scheduled around the full moon, making for some of the most beautiful night skies every month.
